Toughening agent refers to a substance that can increase the flexibility of the adhesive film. Some thermosetting resin adhesives, such as epoxy resin, phenolic resin and unsaturated polyester resin adhesives after curing, low elongation, greater fragility, when the bonding site under external force is easy to crack, and rapid expansion, resulting in cracking, fatigue resistance, can not be used as structural bonding. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the brittleness, increase the toughness and improve the bearing strength. The material that can reduce brittleness and increase toughness without affecting the other main properties of the adhesive is the toughening agent. It can be divided into rubber toughening agent and thermoplastic elastomer toughening agent
(1) Rubber toughening agent this kind of toughening agent varieties mainly include liquid polysulfide rubber, liquid acrylic rubber, liquid polybutadiene rubber, nitrile rubber, ethylene pro-pylene rubber and styrene butadiene rubber, etc.
(2) thermoplastic elastomer Thermoplastic elastomer is a kind of synthetic material that shows rubber elasticity at room temperature and can be plasticized at high temperature. Therefore, this kind of polymer has the characteristics of both rubber and thermoplastic, it can be used as a toughening agent of composite materials, and can be used as the matrix material of composite materials. This kind of material mainly includes polyurethane, styrene, polyolefin, polyester, interregular 1, 2-polybutadiene and polyamides and other products, at present as the toughening agent of composite materials used more styrene and polyolefin.
(3) Other toughening agents Other toughening agents suitable for composites are low molecular weight polyamides and low molecular weight inactive toughening agents, such as phthalate esters. An inactive toughening agent may also be called a plasticizer, which does not participate in the curing reaction of the resin.
The toughening agent is suitable for adhesives, rubber, coatings and other products. It is a kind of auxiliary agent which can reduce the brittleness of composite materials and improve the impact resistance of composite materials. It can be divided into active toughening agent and inactive toughening agent. Active toughening agent refers to its molecular chain containing active groups that can react with the matrix resin, which can form a network structure, add a part of flexible chain, and thus improve the impact resistance of the composite material. Inactive toughening agent is a kind of toughening agent which is soluble with matrix resin but does not participate in chemical reaction
